I’m sitting in front of the work desk and slowly turning the leather between my fingers smoothing it over with the horse grease…it has a distinctive smell…as if I were transported to an old shoemaker’s workshop for a bit…dear old Mr. Oroszi is sitting in the corner with the ever-present nails held in the corner of his mouth…the door lets out a familiar creak and Mr. Oroszi is smiling mischievously from behind the overcrowded counter in the small shoemaker’s workshop in the corner of Ferenc square.
Working with leather has its own unique magic.
Bringing a dream to life is an uplifting feeling.
It reminds me of my grandmother’s story I’ve heard so many times…my mother brought her a wallet as a gift from a school trip abroad…unfortunately she must have chosen the wrong one because my grandmother complained for years that it’s lousy and that she doesn’t like it…and then when my grandfather passed away too, following my grandmother, this wallet was still in the drawer where she had kept it.
She had used it for forty years, and now that it’s lying on my desk I can see that it is still intact, the thick leather hasn’t even frayed.
This is what is going through my mind as I am applying the finishing touches to this piece…the work is almost like meditation, I do it as slowly as possible paying attention to the tiniest details so that the few pieces I make will serve their owners for the rest of their lives and perhaps one day they will lie on a table and someone will look at them and reminisce about their parents or their childhood.
There is a certain magic in this.
A magic that spans generations.
